Objective

The objective of the Peg Solitaire game is to remove all but one of the pegs from the board by jumping over them with other pegs.

Rules

Initially, all the holes of the board are filled with pegs except for one.

The game is played by jumping one peg over another peg that is next to it (horizontally or vertically), and landing it in an empty hole. The peg that was jumped over is then removed from the board.

The game is won when only one peg remains on the board, ideally in the center hole. However, if the game ends with more than one peg remaining on the board, the player has lost.

Peg Solitaire is played on a board with holes, and the layout of the board can differ.

History

The game's earliest known record dates back to 1697, during the reign of Louis XIV, and is depicted in an engraving made ten years later by Claude Auguste Berey. In the engraving, Anne de Rohan-Chabot, Princess of Soubise, is shown next to the puzzle. Additionally, the August 1697 edition of the French literary magazine Mercure galant includes a description of the game board, rules, and some sample problems, marking the first known printed reference to the game.

Use the mouse to select pegs and move them around. A mouse click selects a peg, then select an empty space to move to.
